The Central Med is the deadliest migration route in the world. Yet many have no other choice than to risk their lives to escape from Libya.
22,951 missing migrants have been recorded in Mediterranean since 2014, many more go unrecorded. It is considered one of the great political failures of modern times.

While the EU still grapples with a "European solution", the civilian rescue ship Sea-Watch 3 sets off for the Central Mediterranean on October 10, 2021. In seven rescue operations close to the Libyan border, the crew was able to save over 400 people from dying at sea or illegal pushbacks to prisons in Libya.

This series was shot as part of an embedded commission onboard the Sea-Watch 3 to document the civilian rescue mission as well as the underreported illegal pushbacks happening daily at the EU borders.
